Peter Garrett attended the P&C Group on Tuesday 15th May to find out more about what the group has been achieving over the last year or so. Peter Garrett had the opportunity to hear directly from the group, as to why they were involved and what kind of outcomes they have had since being a part of this group.

Polly Grundy the P&C Group founder, spoke to Peter about the importance of parents being engaged within their school environment as well as with their own child’s education. Polly explained the organisation she works for ‘UDesign’ wanted to give back to their community and asked Polly if she had any ideas. As Polly used to sit on one of the local P&C’s for many years, she identified a gap between schools communicating with one another and even working together.

Polly then approached her Manager and suggested she put together a P&C Coop for all p&c’s within schools to be invited to come along to, so they could all start to work with one another and share resources. This is when the P&C Group was born. The group started with 3 local schools, and has now grown to having 29 local High and Primary schools involved. UDesign supplied the group with resources such as popcorn machines, fairy floss, snowcone machines and there latest edition a 12 seater bus. All of these resources are available to those schools that are involved in the P&C Group at no cost, so that school can benefit in making more of a profit when it comes to market days to the public. The bus has been a great resource for schools, with it being booked out and accessed by most schools in the region.

Early this year the P&C Group in partnership with Macarthurparents.com.au brought out Dr Michael Carr-Gregg to facilitate 3 sessions at Ingleburn High School. These sessions were delivered to 250 local students, 500 teachers and 250 local parents. The feedback was outstanding and it was identified that there is a real need in our community for such events. The P&C Group will now look into holding annual events for these target groups due to the outstanding turn out as well as having that opportunity to give back to our community.

For more information on the P&C Group, please visit http://www.pandccoop.org/

The definition of disability is broad and includes people with chronic medical conditions, learning disabilities and mental illness. This resource was developed by the National Disability Coordination Officer (NDCO) program hosted by the University of Western Sydney, through a Strategic Project Grant funded by the Australian Government.

The new resource includes a guidebook and a range of supplementary factsheets including comprehensive content on topics such as:

top ten tips for parents and carers;

explanation of the transition process and elements of good transition planning;

advice on the positive roles parents can play during transition, navigating their changing parental roles during the process, overcoming common transition barriers; and working constructively with professionals involved;

overall description of post-school pathways and detailed facts on each specific option, including entry processes, how to access disability support and where to find more information; and

facts on disability and privacy rights and responsibilities of young people with disability.

Click here for more information and to download The Guide and the 13 supplementary fact sheets.

The Guide accompanies an existing workbook for young people with disability called Get ready for study and work: Top ten tips for young people with disability which is also available online at the same website. The two resources can be used together or independently.

Body image is an issue of concern to young people. Research tells us that negative body image can affect self-esteem and general well-being, inhibit participation in social activities and lead to serious health issues such as depression and social isolation.

This is why the Australian Government is taking action to promote positive body image and to build young people’s resilience to negative body image pressures.

The Positive Body Image Awards will recognise the positive steps taken by the media, fashion and advertising industries to adopt the principles outlined in the Voluntary Industry Code of Conduct.

The Australian Government has been working to provide more information to the public on positive body image, and resources have been developed to assist schools to create a body image friendly environment.

The Australian Government has announced body image initiatives to promote positive body image among young people.

These initiatives focus on building young people’s resilience to negative body image pressures and promoting leadership and positive cultural change in the fashion, media and advertising industries.

To help build young people’s resilience to body image pressures, the Government has:
