Apprenticeships & Traineeships

Australian Apprenticeships & Traineeships are a great way to start a career!  An Apprenticeship OR Traineeship combines both practical and theory training to give your child a nationally recognised qualification and the experience you need to get the job they want. Training can be quite flexible, with a wide range of traditional trades to choice from as well as a wide range of emerging industry sectors.

Your child could have the option of attending TAFE or a training institute one day per week over the years, or complete a set of training, known as block release – which can take place over a 2-4 week block attending each day of those weeks.
Apprenticeships usually take up to 3-4 years to complete, and Traineeships can be completed within 12 months. If students have studied a VET (Vocational Education & Training) course at school and then choose to complete an Apprenticeship or Traineeship in the same field, they can be entitled to Recognition of their prior learning (RPL), gaining credit for what they have already completed at school.

So what are they? How can my child get involved? What courses are available? Who do I talk to?

School based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are more than just your average part time jobs, in fact there a great start and way to set your child up for their career and while they are still studying at school and completing their HSC.
School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships are available to all year 10, 11 and 12 High School students in NSW. These allow students to start an apprenticeship and or complete a traineeship, before leaving school and entering the workforce.

Students receive payment for their apprenticeship or traineeship while at school as well as receiving an industry recognised national qualification while at school. Student’s studying an Apprenticeship will have finished their formal training by their HSC, and most Traineeships will have been completed by the end of their HSC.
